Lowered Expectations

When we were kids we always thought that the Lowered Expectations skits on Mad TV were hilarious. And while a look back confirms that they were funny (and a bit cruel), I am more interested in the phrase “Lowered Expectations” than the humor.

Sometimes you have to just lower your expectations. OF YOURSELF. What a great New Year’s Resolution, eh? Haha. For the past few months, I lowered my own expectations for myself. I stopped feeling guilty for not attending every event, remembering every birthday, taking every picture, and (as you’ve probably noticed) blogging every moment. I needed a break. A break from the schedule that I had created for myself. A break from obligations. A break from expectations.

While I would say this isn’t my new life mission, I’ve learned a little bit. Balance, balance, balance. Only you can control the balance in your life. Outside circumstances are always going to be flying at you a mile a minute. But you can say no. And that means you can even say no to yourself sometimes. We live in such a sense of urgency, and I’m fighting to find a different pace.

So, I apologize for being so absent on this good ‘ol blog. I’m coming back. Promise. Just at a different pace and with not as high expectations of myself.

*Disclaimer: I know this blog post might sound like I am completely lazy and unmotivated. I promise, its not meant to come across that way. I am just realizing how much of life you miss when you are sprinting instead of jogging. :)

Amen! It’s not lazy; it’s wise, and healthy. Good for you. Though I personally have not, my parents have read “In Praise of Slowness” (http://www.amazon.com/Praise-Slowness-Worldwide-Movement-Challenging/dp/006054578X), and I think it describes some of the things you mentioned. Check it out if you’re so inclined. Again…good for you. :)

Good for you. You are learning something that took me many more years to understand. It’s not about doing it all, it’s about being present in the moment and getting the most out of all you do.

Taking break sometimes is good, I am on my break too… I think everybody needs some time off to re-charge their battery. It’s alright..
